Gary “Flying Kiwi” Papps, 61, of Ramona, California, brings decades of dirt-track experience to the SoCal Mower Racing Club as a racer, engine builder, and event organizer. Before switching to mowers, Gary raced the No. 8 IMCA Modified at Barona Speedway, with documented results dating to 2003 and a third-place finish in July 2004. His final IMCA season was 2007. He began racing lawnmowers in 2008 and has competed ever since. As owner-operator of Kiwi Motors, Gary builds many of the club’s racing lawnmower engines using the Briggs & Stratton Vanguard platform. His work powers fellow competitors, meaning he often races against machines with engines he built himself. Gary also helps manage club racing events at Barona Raceway, Perris Raceway, and Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway. Whether building engines, organizing races, or chasing the checkered flag, the Flying Kiwi remains an active part of Southern California’s grassroots racing community.
